Shirley knows what it feels like to be shunned in the community and other children being told not to play with her children. She wasn’t even welcome at church. Her father was the notorious serial killer, Pee Wee Gaskins.
At the age of 25 she took the witness stand to testify against her father. She had sworn on the Bible to tell the truth. She knew it would send her father whom she loved to the electric chair.
She stayed in the Pee Dee, faced her legacy and lived above her past. She keeps foster children of all races and ages and loves them in spite of their difficult past. She encourages them to “hold their head high because they are no better and no worse than anyone else.” She has kept more than 100 children over the years. Shirley understands.
